Title: Moon Runner

Author: Carolyn Marsden

Published: 2007

Wouldn`t it be cool to have a group called Fellow friends and have secret handshakes, certificates and a friendship ball that you all weave your friendship into?  Mina has joined this group at her new school. Too cool!

She is a bit of a dreamer, a doodler, and doesn`t like sleepovers. Do you? I bet you wonder why she doesn`t like them? Is she too cool?

She didn`t like sports but then she got into running. She ran because it felt good but there was a problem. I can`t tell you why because it would spoil the book. She worried that what she was going to do would destroy a friendship.  She has a lot of courage in how she fixes this problem. She really changes as a character and become more assertive and faced her friend and problem to work it out. Now she is really cool!

I love the way the writer links the moon to the story and the images she uses: `The moon, almost invisible , still hung over the desert mountains.` I love the words `almost invisible` as it makes me think that I can only just see it, that it has nearly disappeared. I love `hung` because I have never really thought of the moon hanging.  The author is cool!!

Do you wonder why it is called Moon Runner and why she keeps a moon journal?  Many ancient civilisations made stories up about the moon. Have you heard of `The man in the moon? He is really COOL!!

RECOMMENDED FOR COOL KIDS: easy to read but great ideas about friendship and being true to yourself Star Rating: ****

  1. Hi Miss Maguire! (Please correct me if I’m wrong.)

I like your example of how to write a blog comment on a book. I really liked how you gave your opinion on the text. Because sometimes, when you give your opinion on something in the book, it persuades people in a way to read the book. Like now, I feel interested in the book.

    Sincerely,
    Tallulah 4G.

    • I agree, I think you were so convincing Mrs Macguire because I had a dream last night of the book you presented!

      Miss Severino.

  4. Hello 4G, Ms Maguire and Ms Severino,

I think that blogging about books is an excellent way to ‘spread the word’ about the books that are out there for young people to read, just like the fabulous students of Our Lady’s. I often read book reviews in the newspaper because there are so many books out there, sometimes it can be difficult to find one that might interest you. Having the recommendation of another person really does help. I look forward to reading more book reviews in the future.

  5. Hello 4G, Ms Severino and Ms Maguire,
I agree with all of the comments. We have ben working hard all year to develop our knowledge, skills and abilities to write a journal entry. A journal entry is very similiar to a blog comment. It is a terrific way to communicate your thinking, feeling and understanding of a text. This was our learning intention last week.
I look forward to reading many of your blog comments!
I am sure it will be a great resource for all of you as your peers comments will be useful book recommendations for you!
Remember reading is fun, relaxing and provides us with endless learning opportunities.
    Happy reading
    Mrs Carabott.

    Title: Loser?
    Author: Jerry Spinelli
    Published: 2002

Losers? is a very funny and a bizarre book since a teams parents like to do embarrassing things. You will never know what will happen when a team scores a goal and the coach screams at them. Will the the wiggly worms beat the rotten rats or will they always lose?
Wouldn’t it be cool to have a whole team supporting you in soccer?
For all I can say is that in soccer no one should whinge when someone scores goal.

  9. The Zombiesons are a family of zombies that do not like eating flesh. They prefer pizza, LUCKY FOR US! You still might think that these zombies would eat your brains. Well, they won’t, for many reasons that you can find in the book.

You will find that even the most harmless thing will scare them! (You never know when this is going to happen. This is what makes the book funny.)

Zigi found a small hole behind Tut’s sarcophagus. He found a map that used to be owned by a crazy explorer, who used to be Mr. Zomebieson’s old friend. As I told you before, the most harmless thing will scare the Zombiesons. So camping with their old friend will be a big challenge!

If you have read this book before and you have enjoyed it, I would suggest you to read either other books from the Freak Street series, or “Meet the Zombiesons” or “Zombiesons and the Time Machine”. I would recommend this book for anyone who is in grade 3 or 4.

    • Hi Tallulah,
I enjoyed reading your descriptive blog post!
Was there anything about the text you disliked? Any connections? Any wonderings?
Remember a blog post can be like a journal entry so your thoughts are backed up with evidence. It is also a great way to convince others to read the text.
How many of the ‘Freak Street’ series have you read?
      Regards Mrs Carabott

      • Just in chase if you don’t know, “sarcophagus” means something like tomb, ok Mrs Carabott?

  10. Title: The Buddha’s Diamonds
Author: Carolyn Marsden and Thay Phap Niem

Tinh is a boy with a sister named Lan. A man talks about some diamonds in the temple one day but are these diamonds real?

One day Tinh goes to sea in a bamboo boat that shines the color gold to catch fish with Ba. Will they be okay? Or will they get caught up in the killer storm?

Can Tinh make it up to Ba for doing something wrong, or will he get another punishment? How bad will his punishment be? Will he regret all of it or will he be happy with what he did?

Maybe he could be a really COOOOL KID after what he did. Maybe Buddha will be proud for all the hard work he did.

You will have to read the book to find out the answers to all these questions.
Recommended for people who hope for things and who have an imagination

    • Great to see you have posted a book review!

What parts of the book did you enjoy Tristan? Did you make any connections with anything in the story?

      From Miss Severino.

    • Hi Tristan,
I enjoyed reading your blog post! What is it about the book you are enjoying?
You have captured me by the way you completed your blog post. I would love to read your journal entry on this text where you include evidence and your thoughts, feelings and understanding,
      Great job!
      Regards Mrs Carabott

    • Hi Mrs Carabott!

Oh, of course I’ll tell you. So far, everything’s ok and I am enjoying that book. I have had some connections. Zigi likes to play a game called ball toss, and he accedently threw the ball in the crack of his mansion. This reminded me of all the times that I accidently kicked Nana’s ball over the fence!

I know what you said about how we can back our thoughts with evidence, and I will type up some page numbers soon. (I can’t do it now because I am generally writing in the blog at home.)

I have some Freak Street books at home owned by my big brother. I’ve read two of his. Plus, part of the Zombiesons book. My brother has Meet the Aliensons and Aliensons: Time Machine.

its great to see a second book review. I would like to know what you liked about this book? Why did you decide to review it? You have given a good retell but I’m not clear on what you thought/felt about it.

    Miss Severino.

  13. Hi Richard!

It is great to hear that you are reading a Roald Dahl book because recently, I have been reading the Great Glass Elevator which is a Roald Dahl book. My mum recommended to me Matilda, but I am reading Fantastic Mr. fox, which you should know. (In chase you don’t, it is another Roald Dahl book.)

You have gripped me into reading Matilda Richard, and I will defiantly take my mum’s recommendation into reading Matilda for my next read! It sounds really interesting!

    Thankyou!
    -Tallulah.

    • Dear Tallulah,
Of course I know its a Ronald Dahl book I have the whole collection of it.
Hope you will read the magic finger also by Ronald dahl

          • No no. Emily Eye Finger is a series written by the author Duncan Ball.

Check it out some time. I saw a play of it a few years ago actually. That is how I discovered it.

  14. Hi 4G! I am reading and going to review Finn Family Moomintroll today! I hope that you enjoy this review as I think that most of you with creative minds will and for myself, this would be one of my favourite books.

    Title: Finn Family Moomintroll
    Author: Tove Jansson
    Date: 02/09/14

Have you ever had something weird happen to you? Moomin has experienced this but it isn’t ordinary. Moomin plays games with his friends like Hide and seek. His friends are Snufkin, Snork, his sister Snork Maiden and the Hemulen. Moomin forgot about this mysterious hat that casts spells on the wearer/if something goes in it. (Only if you are a very small figure.) And he jumped in .What happens to Moomin?

Finn Family Moomintroll is truly a magical tale that anybody can enjoy. there are lots of peaceful moments weather it is a nice chat with a friend or making good magic. There are also moments where there are bad bits too. But you can never expect anything in Moominvalley. There are so many wonderful things to expect that you won’t know which one it is going to be. And bits where there is always something new if something bad happens.

Tove Jansson has inspired me herself because of her wonderful Moomin series which I really enjoy. I would recommend this book to anyone grade 2+. I would rate the book 9/10 stars!

    -Thankyou for reading my comment!

    Tallulah 4G.
P.S. I hope my picture went out ok not to ruin my writing.

    • Sounds like a great book! Can you share one of those making good magic moments with us?

      • Ok, so are you sure? I hope I don’t give you too many SPOILERS!

As I told you before, the Hobgoblin Hat does some terrible things if you are not careful. So here is what happened that was good with the magic; So, after Moomin had breakfast, he put his eggshells absentmindedly into the Hobgoblin’s Hat. Later on, they changed into clouds, that Moomin and his friends got one each and they played games. They also cheered up the gloomy Hemulen with them!

If you want more magic moments that are good, stay tuned because I am still reading the book and there will be more I just know it that I will type up here!

        -Tallulah 4G.

          • Ooh, oh no… you don’t be a cloud, you ride one! Also, if it did happen in the book, that would be fun too!

  15. Hi 4G!

If you want to know when my book Finn Family Moomintroll was published, don’t worry about asking me because I am finding it now.
